Hiding in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Big Spring Farm is the ideal Virginia Wedding Venue for couples who want something a little bit secluded and a whole lot of southern elegance. With its magazine worthy stunning views, modern amenities, and privacy from the outside world you are going to have everything you could possibly need to host the wedding of your dreams at any budget! As a Lexington wedding photographer and videographer, I am lucky enough to travel all across the state and check out the very best venues to share with my couples. Here is what you need to know about hosting a Big Spring Farm wedding after many visits myself!

104 Fredericksburg Rd, Lexington, Virginia 24450
If this is your first introduction to Big Spring Farm then you are in for a special treat. This highland wedding venue is not just a gathering space it is another chapter in a years-long wedding and love story. The venue was founded by Jill and Buddy Powers, a couple who had spent 11 years as wedding photographers, so they truly know a thing or two about hosting an event to remember. Lucky for you and I, about a decade ago, they decided they wanted to find a brand new way to help couples set out on their next great adventure.
They moved to Lexington, Virginia to what would soon be Big Spring Farm and founded a sustainable farm focused on regenerative livestock. These days, they live on the property along with their four kids, caring deeply for the land, hosting unforgettable celebrations, and dreaming of the next best thing to bring to the land. They offer a number of locations across the 500 acres that you can use for your wedding day. From their historic waterfront barn, the 19th-century restored home to get ready in and host weekend festivities, to their stunning on site cabins you will have a wedding day full of Southern charm!

If the photos of the property don’t sell themselves, Big Spring Farm gives you everything you could possibly need for your wedding right on the property which is hard to come by with modern Wedding venues in Virginia. The morning of your wedding will start as early as 8 AM when you will be able to access the Bridal Suite. This quaint house was designed to be a comfortable spot to get ready alongside your wedding party and be separated from the hustle of the venue set up. On the first level, you will have a lounge area, bathroom, and large bedroom space. Upstairs, you will have two bedrooms full of natural light, as well as a kitchenette where you can crack open a bottle of bubbly and snack on some charcuterie while relaxing with your besties through hair and makeup. Trust me, you are going to feel positively spoiled!

Once it’s time for your wedding festivities to take place, you will head right down the road where you will have your choice of ceremony locations across the hundreds of acres. No matter what spot you choose, you are going to have a view unlike any other! For those who want something a bit more tranquil and unique, you can have your ceremony by private lake at the Peninsula site, where you will have the naturally fed spring serve as your backdrop.
Then the rest of the night is hosted in the open cocktail space by the water, under the porch and inside the barn to dance the night away. The reception space also features catering space to fit any fun cuisines, there are permanent restrooms available so no extra costs there, and the barn doors can be opened or closed to best fit any weather.

If water is not what fits your vision then there is an amazing mountainside location that is well kept and accessible to all guests! Then try the Big Spring Farm Hillside wedding site, where you will see the Shenandoahs rolling as far as the eye can see. While this view is gorgeous no matter the time of year, it becomes especially magical during autumn weddings when the leaves start to turn! Then from there if you imagine something even more unique with draping or stunning tent views there is space for a tent on site as well, like I said this venue can accomplish so many types of wedding visions.
Truly, what I love the most about this venue for your ceremony is how pretty much every style will feel right at home. Black-tie weddings can stay near the barn under a tent with al fresco dining enjoying the waterside bar, indoor amenities, and breathtaking exteriors. Then more traditional southern weddings will love the open field or barn backdrop.
Regardless of your wedding style, the true winner of the property is the courtyard right outside the barn which is the place to be for your cocktail hour or late night activities!

Finally, your Big Spring Farm day will conclude with the wedding reception. You can either opt for an outdoor celebration in the courtyard or you can head inside the historic barn, where you will have a country chic backdrop for hours of dancing! Dressed up with draping, florals, and lights or just showcasing the raw wood the main barn features towering walls with raftered ceilings and perfectly imperfect beams that let in just the right amount of light.
If you prefer an outdoor reception, you can bring in a sailcloth tent with wooden beams throughout or host an outdoor summer soiree. With greenery and flower centerpieces, it is downright magical! The best news is that this venue is ready to host up to 300 guests, making it a great option for weddings of all sizes!

As a wedding photographer, you know I have to talk about all the Big Spring Farm photo opportunities. Trust me, there are a lot! I adore the picture-perfect bridal suite, where we can get plenty of candid shots that tell the story of your wedding day morning. I personally love using this area for candid shots showing all the joy of this moments before heading over to the main venue space.
Then once you reach the ceremony and reception location there is not a single direction you could point the camera where the scene is not perfect. Whether you pick the mountain views for your ceremony or say your special “I Do’s” beneath the willows there will be plenty of tears captured. For your couple’s portraits, you can use the surrounding nature. If you really want to kick it up a notch, I recommend booking the Mountaintop Experience, where they will take you up to the top of the Shenandoahs on a Polaris. With rolling hills and colorful wildflowers, it gives you a backdrop unlike any other!

At Big Springs Farm, they are going to ensure you have everything you need for your dream day in terms of space and support. When you book the bridal suite, they are going to have an on-site attendant there to be by your side. But what happens next? The venue gives you the freedom to bring in your own food from their trusted list, alcohol, and select your own licensed vendors so you can create your uniquely you wedding day.
So while this blog is centered around the amazing day you can have by booking this venue. It would be a major disservice to you as a wedding photographer from Lexington to not remind you that while a venue backdrop is a vital part of the day, the rest of the magic does not happen without a top shelf vendor team. You will need help laying out the timeline for the day, delegating who will execute the timeline tasks and where, the wedding day dream look does not happen without the help of a talented HMUA, a florist will be the perfect part of making the venue unique to your personal color palette, catering and your selected dj are what will be controlling the environment of the day, and all the big memories of the day will soon be forgotten without the help of photo and video to freeze those moments to be lived again and again for years to come.
After 250+ weddings here is a list of people I know will not let you down;

So now that you know this is the perfect venue for you and you’re ready to book, let’s take a quick moment for what’s to come. A venue and date will now kickstart the rest of your wedding planning and vendor bookings. There is a lot of different opinions for what it takes to have a good wedding, firstly the goal of the day is for you to celebrate the combining of two lives into one. You can do it on any budget, but on average it is most common to expect to spend between $20,000-$50,000 Here’s a general estimate of what couples might spend for a wedding at House Mountain Inn, based on a 100–150 guest event:
Estimated Total for 100 Guests:
Low End: ~$26,300
High End: ~$80,000+
Keep in mind these are general ranges— Big Spring Farms simplifies as much as possible.
