Like most of Southern, Virginia the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains make for a number of beautiful places for maternity photos in Blacksburg. The never ending nature provides a session space that feels calm, natural, and deeply meaningful. Sessions can include a beautiful mix of scenic overlooks, open fields, intimate downtown scenes, lakes, and wooded trails. Which is perfect for my blend of artistic approach as a Blacksburg and Roanoke Maternity Photographer that focuses on the individuality and intimacy of your next chapter as soon to be parents.
Below are some of the most beautiful and well-loved locations for maternity photography in and around Blacksburg, Virginia.
Table of Contents

Whether you’re drawn to wide mountain views, tall grasses swaying in the breeze, or peaceful walking paths tucked just beyond town, Blacksburg is a place that invites you to slow down. It’s a place where your maternity session can feel unhurried, reflective, and deeply personal meaning we can be truly focused on the anticipation, joy, and quiet strength of becoming a mother.
The New River Valley and its counter parts down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Roanoke offer endless photography opportunities. The scenery is unbelievably beautiful in every season and many of the best maternity photo locations around Blacksburg are easy to reach and allow plenty of room to move, rest, and breathe. As a Virginia Wedding Photographer one of my greatest joys is seeing so many of my couples entering the next stage of their lives and having the true honor of capturing the milestones. There really is something for every couple trying to capture the beautiful season before welcoming a new family member into their life.
Truly the most beautiful spot I recommend to my clients is Heritage Park right next to Virginia Tech. This spot is the most iconic golden hour mountain background I have found in the New River Valley and is secluded away from the hustle of the growing downtown just down the road. With winding trails and 3 different areas to explore this spot offers seclusion for couples who may be shy in front of the camera or wanting to explore a more natural attire to show their changing body. Depending on the season you can find wildflowers, tall grass, fall foliage, open views of the sunset and mountains for miles!

Not as popular, but very beautiful is Pandapas Pond. Known as one of the most peaceful locations in the Blacksburg area because it requires a little more walking but this spaces out by passers. With still water, tree-lined paths, and soft light filtering through the woods, it’s ideal for maternity sessions that feel reflective and grounded. In spring and summer, everything feels lush and green, while fall brings rich color and texture that photographs beautifully.
One may not expect a college campus for their maternity session, but this hidden garden on Virginia Techs campus is truly full of life. Blooming flowers specific to every season, winding brick paths, and mountain views create a refined yet organic feel all wrapped in one space. This location works especially well for mothers drawn to soft colors, flowing dresses, and a slightly more editorial look while still keeping things relaxed and natural.
If you have not quite caught on yet, I am a huge fan of having water for your maternity session. Nothing says you have to get in the water, but Claytor Lake even without the water has so much nature to explore for your session. This option is a little more South of Blacksburg so its perfect for couples traveling from a more southern location or who want to check out something new. With camp sites and trails you can have fun with this location, have a picnic with your gender reveal cake or end the evening roasting some smores snuggling under a blanket.

Right down the road from Blacksburg you can hop over to the Blue Ridge Parkway which is full of unlimited potential for your maternity session. Free standing rocks, trails to hidden mountain overlooks, open fields, and more amazing Virginia landmarks can be seen right from these noteable parkway locations.
One of my most popular locations couples select is the known as Back Creek Overlook. Right outside of Explore Park it boasts open fields, tall grasses, and expansive mountain views create a serene, airy setting that feels both powerful and peaceful. It is at the top of the valley so the peak of golden hour lasts longer than anywhere else and the evening breeze makes for magical photos. The minimal traffic and wide space allow for calm, uninterrupted moments but still allow you to drive right to the location. Portraits captured here feel grounded, wholehearted, and reflective.

Similar to Backcreek Overlook, another Blue Ridge Parkway overlook that has dozens of perfect backdrops is Cahas Mountain Overlook. It has one perfect peak right in the center background behind the field that couples love. The overlook itself is east-facing, so it’s one I would recommend for sunrise if you want that epic light behind the mountains, but it’s also stunning in the evening especially if you are making a few stops throughout the evening.
There is nothing like stepping out of your car into what feels like its own private lakeside island right off the blue ridge parkway. sessions here are unhurried and intentional. We move gently through the area, pausing where the light feels soft and the views open up naturally. There’s room to walk, laugh, talk, and take in the scenery together. Rather than rigid posing, the focus is on connection — the way you lean into one another, the quiet smiles, the shared anticipation of what’s ahead.

If you are looking for a more intense mountain look for your maternity session that showcases a more rocky feel check out these mountain session locations across Virginia.
Another possible my favorite maternity session spot a little down 81 from Blacksburg is Green Hill Park. Located right along the river in Salem, Virginia offering the perfect combination of distant mountain views, waterfront views, small scale rocky spots, and stunning open fields. It is easily accessible by foot and car in any season with a slight variance in tree coloring and water levels. Also for those who want mountain views with no hiking needed, this is your jam the entire park is completely flat.

A location worth traveling from all over the state for, the award winning Carvins Cove. This space offers clean water, almost360 mountain views, and open space all in one location. With every changing shorelines, scenic rock formations perfect for portraits, and quiet trails all the way around the cove, it’s an ideal setting for maternity sessions that feel peaceful and connected to nature. It’s also a great option for including partners, pets, or children, with plenty of space to move comfortably. A small entry fee is required, and boating is permitted for those wanting a unique, gentle water element.

If Downtown Blacksburg is too modern for your session, mountains definitely are not the only part of Roanoke worth noting. Riddled in historical architecture and more of the fancier things in life you should consider a stroll around Downtown Roanoke for your engagement photos. Depending on the season you can stroll around for a coffee, an ice cream cone, or find a rooftop to hang out on with the amazing cityscape.
A few notable place to stop along the way

You’ve truly not seen a lake like this, Smith Mountain Lake is perfect from every corner of access. With multiple secluded islands, gorgeous boat decks, and just stunning mountain views above the water it is a great choice for any type of maternity session. While some may think this is only a good fit for a summer session, the beauty of the lake lasts year round. Some spots require a small fee and some may require a quick walk, but many spots are accessible and unlike other locations swimming is allowed here so for the adventurous lovers this is the perfect spot to jump into the water, try out paddle boarding, and more!
Named in many history books but often forgotten as a photo session location, Natural Bridge State Park is worth every bit of its place on this list. Some may think it is only useable for its 215-foot natural rock arch, but surrounding this Virginia state park is rolling hills with mountain views and gorgeous pathways. I highly recommend considering this spot for your maternity session or any style of session.
So many amazing locations to choose from and you truly can not go wrong with any choice.
